Acupuncture & Dry Needling
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is one of the oldest forms of alternative medicine that can help with your recovery. Some studies have shown acupuncture to be effective in reducing pain at the site of injury. Prior to your treatment, you will be educated on the risks, benefits, precautions and contra-indications to having acupuncture, to help the physiotherapist determine if this is right for you and to help you make an informed decision.
If deemed safe and you consent to acupuncture treatment, the treatment will involve inserting a pre-packaged, sterilized needle along different pathways of the body (called meridians) to help promote blood flow and reduce pain and inflammation. For the most part, acupuncture is painless, although some patients may feel a pin-prick sensation when the needle goes in. However, once the needle is in place, it should no longer be painful. Acupuncture treatment is included to complement your physiotherapy treatment and is included in the cost of the session.
Dry Needling
A slightly newer form of treatment when compared to acupuncture, dry needling varies in that the pre-packaged, sterilized needle is now inserted directly into the area of injury. Prior to your treatment, you will be educated on the risks, benefits, precautions and contra-indications to having acupuncture, to help the physiotherapist determine if this is right for you and to help you make an informed decision.
If deemed safe and you consent to dry needling treatment, the treatment will consist of inserting the needle into “tight” muscles, however it can also be inserted into connective tissue or around nerves as they course through the body. The principle behind dry needling is that by applying a direct stimulus to the target tissue, you can create a neuropathic response to the spinal cord , which can help either relax or excite the muscle or reduce pain to help the body to heal naturally.
